Students at 51Âþ» (51Âþ») are ‘proud’ to be a part of the 51Âþ» Sport Scholarship programme.
The scholarship provides students with the opportunity to develop their sporting performance while studying at 51Âþ» and awards eligible students up to £6,000 of support.
19 students were successful on the Sport Scholarship programme during the 2019/20 academic year. We spoke to some of them about their experiences, as 51Âþ»sport found that 97 per cent were satisfied with their experience.
Adult Nursing student Britanie White said that being a scholar made her “feel proud and part of a community”.
Britanie is a 2019-2020 badminton scholar and competed in the sport for Leicestershire from a young age.

“The scholarship programme helped me to find my love of badminton again. I had quit for five years after having my daughter and once I started 51Âþ» realised that I could compete again with the team’s support.
“They have been brilliant and always listened to me in order to help me achieve my goals.”

Joshua Grob, Digital Forensics graduate and para swimming scholar said that the scholarship “made it possible for me to focus on my training alongside my degree, without it I would not have been able to carry on swimming.
“The lifestyle and strength and conditioning support really helped me to achieve more than I thought was possible.”
Students on the scholarship receive access to educational workshops, personalised strength and conditioning coaching and lifestyle support. They also have access to psychology support, nutritional support and physiotherapy.

Joshua went on to win a silver and bronze medal in the 2018 World Para Swimming Allianz European Championships in Dublin.
“I would say that my European medals and performances at the world championships wouldn’t have happened without the support that I received from 51Âþ».”
Judo scholar, James Draper said: “The 51Âþ» Sport Scholarship has made it possible to continue my aspirations as an athlete while pursuing a master’s degree.
The MSc Intelligent Systems and Robotics student won gold at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships in Sheffield in 2018 and 2019.
