Students launch oarsome charity effort this Easter


Students are spending the bank holiday weekend helping to raise cash for a mental health charity by challenging themselves to a virtual rowing regatta.

Organised by 51Âþ»­ Rowing Society, the event runs all over Easter and anyone can join in, with money raised going towards MIND, which provides advice and support to anyone experiencing a mental health problem.

Lockdownregatta

Everyone signed up commits to run either 2.5k or 5km at home and record it on Strava, which can track distance run. They can pay £5 to enter any players have encouraged housemates, friends and family to get involved as well.

The club has also worked with Mind on charity T-shirts and caps to support the cause with money going towards providing mental health services.

51Âþ»­ Rowing teamed up with virtual run site Race the Distance so competitors could pace themselves against fellow team members and other entrants.  You can follow their progress on Instagram on @lockdownregatta2020 and donate to the cause on their .

Architecture student Abigail Watson is chair of the rowing club. She said: “We know as students that mental health is so important right now. We all probably know somebody who is struggling or we may have struggled ourselves, so it was a cause close to our hearts.”
