51Âþ» is proud of its diverse community and, this month, many staff and students of the Islamic faith will be observing Ramadan (a period of fasting) between Thursday 23 April and Saturday 23 May.

Ramadan is a spiritually important period for Muslims as they devote themselves to prayers and worship. There is also an emphasis on community and charity during this time.
Ramadan lasts for 30 days and those fasting won't eat or drink from dawn to sunset. The fast opening, or Iftar, each evening is often a communal experience with family and friends followed by evening prayers.
Ramadan ends with the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr which lasts three days and is set to take place on Saturday 23 May.
Due to COVID-19 we understand that Ramadan will be very different for staff and students this year and want to reassure you that we are here to support you.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact 51Âþ»’s Imam Mohammed Laher who is on hand to support you, you can email him on muslimchaplain@dmu.ac.uk and reach out to your personal tutor for support.
You can find more advice and support in this document produced by The British Board of Scholars & Imams.
