Hi everyone,
I know the Kimberlin Library plays a big part in your experience with us – particularly at this time of year – and one of the projects we had to put on hold prior to Covid was a library extension. When the library was first built in 1977, it was intended to cater to a population of 8,000 students. Since then, 51Âþ» has seen a huge growth in the number of students. We now have more than 25,000 on our Leicester campus and the library is open 24/7 during term time. On occasions it can receive up to 11,000 visits per day – about the same as The British Museum in London on an average day!
We know from your feedback that there’s lots that could be done to improve the library and so I’m delighted to tell you that we’re planning to redevelop the library to enhance the experience of our students even more.
As we begin to think about how we can extend and re-imagine the existing space, we want to hear your thoughts. We have launched a consultation with staff, students and our friends in the community to get your ideas. where you can see more details and get in touch with your thoughts. Look out for the ways to engage on campus with pop-up stands and activities through De Montfort Students’ Union. We will be looking for ways to engage you in the project every step of the way and I’m really looking forward to hearing your ideas. The project will take over a year in its planning phase and until then the Kimberlin will continue to deliver all its current services.
It’s that time of year when, for many of you, we start to look ahead to exam season, which will take place from 2 May to 26 May. To support you in feeling as prepared as possible and in the best position to do well, we have created a dedicated exams webpage, which includes key exam guidance and goes through what to expect on the day. It’s really valuable source of support so I’d encourage you to take the time to read it.
We offer lots of support here at 51Âþ» to help you prepare for what can be a stressful time. The Healthy 51Âþ» Hub has a wealth of resources to help you maintain the right balance with your studies. This includes online mental wellbeing resources and masterclasses to support you during exam season.
Focusing on the here and now can help to improve concentration and regular mindful practice allow you to relax, recharge and refocus during this busy time. We will be offering mindfulness sessions, walk and talks and wellbeing crafts to help you do this I would encourage you to take a look and make sure you prioritise your wellbeing in the coming months.
I want to finish by wishing you the very best of luck with your exams and all your assessments. I am continually impressed with everything our students achieve and I have every faith that you will achieve your goals.
Best wishes,
Katie Normington, Vice-Chancellor, 51Âþ»
