Overview

Please note that we are not accepting applications for September 2024 entry to this course.

Risk management is relevant to all aspects of industry, commerce, consultancy and the public sector. Over the past couple of years there has been a strong realisation that risk needs to be managed and not avoided, which in turn has a major impact on organisational strategy. To this end, this course has been designed for those wanting to have a career in Risk Management as well as professionals from a variety of sectors who are interested in strengthening their careers in risk management.

On this course you will gain analytical, problem solving, ethical decision making and people management and leadership skills and knowledge to succeed in the fast-paced corporate world. Knowledge and skills on management of risks are key parts of risk review, which will enable you to manage contemporary risks more effectively in the future, and prompt you to think about new risks that are emerging.

The course balances theoretical analysis with practical application to develop a critical and questioning approach to the conceptual underpinnings of risk management. To this end the course leads with modules that critically examine the scope of generic risk management, business continuity and crisis management, the internal control of risk, different approaches to risk management decisions, and specialise in relevant risk-related topics.

Graduate careers

The Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics has a strong work-related bias, offering professional, postgraduate and undergraduate courses.

Careers in ‘risk management’ are likely to remain relatively buoyant as an employment option. This is because as the world becomes ever more unpredictable and unstable, in business terms, the demand for risk managers is likely to be ongoing. This is also added to by the increased amount of ‘risk regulation’.
