51Âþ»­ Leicester (51Âþ»­) has once more been named as one of the 150 best young universities in the world by Times Higher Education (THE).

It is the second year running that the university has been named in , which is ranked by the influential publication, after assessing hundreds of institutions across the world, which were founded as universities within the last 50 years.

The list also names 51Âþ»­ as among the top 50 institutions in the world defined as ‘Generation Y’ – those universities formed between 1986 and 1999.

In drawing up , THE studied 13 key indicators, covering research, teaching innovation, international activity and knowledge transfer.

They apply the same performance indicators as the overall THE World University Rankings but the methodology has been carefully recalibrated, with reputation counting for less, to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities.

Phil Baty, Times Higher Education rankings editor, said: “To be included in the Young University Rankings or featured in the THE Young University Rankings features and analyses is a significant achievement.”

In the past year, 51Âþ»­’s flagship international programme, #51Âþ»­global, which offers all students international experiences to enrich their studies, won the Outstanding International Strategy category of the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards.

And the university has also defied a national drop in student applications from the EU, seeing an increase of 29% following the UK’s vote for Brexit.

In the immediate wake of the decision to leave the EU, 51Âþ»­ launched its #LoveInternational campaign.

The initiative both celebrates and reassures international staff and students living and working at universities across the country, and takes this message out overseas, having made visits to Poland, Lithuania, Cyprus, Sweden and, in January, New York.

Professor Dominic Shellard, Vice-Chancellor of 51Âþ»­, said the university’s inclusion on the list once again highlighted 51Âþ»­’s rise in recent years.

He said: “We at 51Âþ»­ are constantly innovating and moving forward, creating pioneering projects like 51Âþ»­ Square Mile India and #51Âþ»­global which aim to transform our students’ experience and it is immensely rewarding to be recognised for work such as this.”
