Contour Fashion student makes more than 600 face masks and donates vital equipment to help COVID-19 fight in India


A Contour Fashion student from 51Âþ»­ Leicester (51Âþ»­) is continuing to go above and beyond to support the people of her home country of India in the battle against COVID-19.

To date, Disha Lulla has used techniques learned on her 51Âþ»­ Contour Fashion course to create and donate over 600 reusable cotton face masks for the people of her local community in Indore, India – where protective masks have been made mandatory.

This month the 21-year-old has stepped up once again by donating vital equipment to her local police department, using her own savings.

Among the equipment donated by Disha is: 160 handmade masks, 10,000 oral rehydration solution pouches, 8,000 vitamin C tablets, 60 litres of hand sanitiser, sanitising machine pumps and infrared thermometers.

Disha said: “I wanted to give back to those who are protecting us in such a difficult time.

“Currently the whole country is on lockdown and the police are maintaining law and order by putting their duty before themselves.”

In a letter to her local police department Disha wrote: “Dear Sirs, on behalf of myself and my family, I wish to give our deepest gratitude for the hard work every one of you has displayed in safeguarding us.

“You have shown the world the highest professionalism and the greatest perseverance over this long, tiring fight against COVID-19.  Please accept the following contribution from my savings.

“I would like to sincerely commend our police officers for the work they are doing at this exceedingly difficult time. we are all immensely proud of you. Salute to you all.”

Disha said: “The police department was overwhelmed by my contribution. To them they are just doing their job but to us they are sacrificing so much to keep us safe. 

“The least I could do is sacrifice my savings. I am helping them so they can keep helping us. I always say to myself, if I can help, I will find a way to make it happen.”
