#51Âþ»global and #51Âþ»works ask for video applications for incredible student trip to Vietnam

Students at 51Âþ» Leicester (51Âþ») are being asked to create a short video to apply to participate in #51Âþ»global’s latest employability-focused opportunity to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

GLOBAL - Vietnam main

The week-long visit to Ho Chi Minh City has been created in cooperation with the university careers programme #51Âþ»works and will be focussed on employability with an Asian flavour. It is open to undergraduates who will be in their second or third year in 2019/20.

Interested students are being asked to create a video between two and three minutes in length which should include a brief introduction, an explanation why they are interested in the opportunities on offer and details of how the week in Vietnam will benefit their studies and future careers.

The application process has been introduced as more and more employers ask for videos as part of their recruitment drives. It means students have the chance to practice something they may need to do when entering the jobs market.

It has been decided that thanks to ongoing interest in the trip the deadline for applications has now been extended to Monday 15 April at 9am.

Head of #51Âþ»global, Leo Smith, who has developed the opportunity with #51Âþ»works and employability experts Pagoda Projects, said: “This is the first opportunity of its kind that we have offered with a video application process that we hope engages students from a wide range of backgrounds and gets them thinking creatively.

“We want students to share their personal stories and say why participating in such an experience will make a difference to them.”

#51Âþ»global are particularly keen to see applications from students receiving hardship funding, those who haven’t participated in #51Âþ»global before or students who have not done much travelling and can demonstrate how the trip would benefit them.

The Vietnam trip, from November 2 to 10, would normally cost close to £1,200 for flights, accommodation and programme fees, but the students will be asked to pay just £299. The trip is designed to give students an insight into the working world in Asia and will focus on job skills using guided events, workshops and industry visits.

While in Ho Chi Minh City the students will take part in a:

  • Crash course Vietnamese language class
  • Seminar and panel discussion with business leaders from a range of industries in Ho Chi Minh City
  • Teamwork exercises and group project leading to a presentation to a panel of experts
  • CV and interview workshop
  • Workshop on communication in cross-cultural business environments

  • Factory visit to experience ‘made in Vietnam’ first-hand

As part of the itinerary students will also have free time to explore the city, as well as participating in a range of exciting cultural activities including a guided street food tour, market tour, Mekong Delta tour and a visit to a the Vietnam War Remnants Museum.

From participating in this experience, students will gain insight into what it is like to live and work in an Asian metropolis. The programme hopes to develop students’ competencies in a variety of areas such as: leadership; teamwork; critical thinking; professionalism and intercultural fluency.

Pagoda projects said:  ‘We also aim for participants to come away from the programme with some tangible elements which assist them as they become global graduates, such as guidance on producing an international-facing CV and a list of funded international graduate programmes in Asia.’
