Children celebrate out of this world competition

Children were sent on their very own space mission when they took part in the competition.

Nine schools from across Leicester competed in the regional heat of the competition, which aims to challenge children to think like scientists and engineers.

This year’s contest, which was called Into Orbit, saw schoolchildren asked to build, test and code an autonomous robot using Lego technology. Their robots were then put to the test and given a series of different missions on a space theme to perform.

The event was organised by #51Âþ»local at 51Âþ» Leicester (51Âþ»). Student volunteers have been going into participating schools during the autumn term helping children to get their robots ready.

Prizes were awarded for teamwork, presentation skills, how well the robot was designed and best new team.

Overall winners were the Dovelands Bright Builders from Dovelands Primary School in Leicester who will now be taking their winning robot, Geoff, to the Lego League UK championships in Bristol next month.

Asked how he felt about winning, year six pupil George said: “I think it’s a dream.”

“We did the coding for Geoff,” said classmate Alfie. “It took us all last year.”

“The best bit was winning,” said Seren, also year six. “Taking part as well, but mostly winning.”

Teacher Alex Cross said: “We’re really proud of all of them. They have worked really hard, and have enjoyed the day. I’m sure they will be getting a thank you in assembly tomorrow.”

The schools taking part this year were Babington Academy, Hazel Community Primary School, Dovelands Primary, Merrydale Junior, Coleman Primary, and Willowbrook Primary Academy.

Staff from Leicester’s National Space Centre were there to talk about real-life space missions. Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, David Wilson, presented the prizes and praised the children’s efforts.

He told them: “It’s a genuine pleasure to be here. Opportunities like this can improve creative thinking, team building skills and skills that will enable you to succeed in life. You should all be very proud of yourselves.”
