Is Brexit a laughing matter? That’s the question which a 51Âþ» Leicester (51Âþ») academic Alistair Jones will be helping to answer as part of Leicester Comedy Festival.
Mr Jones, Associate Professor in University Teacher Fellow Department of Politics, People and Place, will join fellow panellists comedian Matt Forde (who is a former Labour Party strategist), MEP Rory Palmer and performance poet Jess Green for the event on Sunday February 10, chaired by BBC Radio Leicester political reporter, Tim Parker.
Mr Jones said: “The issue of Brexit has confounded everyone – Brexiteers and Remainers alike. It is arguably the most serious issue in our lifetimes. Should we really be poking fun at it? Or at the politicians involved?"
Is Brexit a Laughing Matter? is the latest in a series of successful events run by the festival as part of its Beyond A Joke series which looks at issues in comedy. Previous topics have included whether jokes can go too far, self-censorship and ethics, and the relationship between politics and comedy.
A spokesman for the comedy festival said the panel would discuss whether Brexit is a valid subject for comedians. They added: “Will the biggest peacetime decision in a generation raise a smile or is it not a laughing matter?”
The event starts at noon at PETER Pizzeria on Welford Road and will last about an hour. Doors open at 11.40am. Tickets are free.
