After joining 51Âþ» Leicester (51Âþ») through clearing last summer, Performing Arts student Bridie Gibbs has told students ‘don’t be scared and go for 51Âþ»!’
After doing the first year of her degree at another university, Bridie wasn’t happy with her situation and decided to do something about it.
When she was told about the level of teaching and opportunities available by former 51Âþ» students, she sent an email which started the life-changing process of transferring to 51Âþ» through clearing.
She explained: “It was a very simple and easy process. I had some email contact and then I was told to apply for the course through clearing.
“I’d heard so many good things about 51Âþ», especially the fact that Akram Khan studied here, and a lot of people were giving it loads of praise. I think now is a really good time to be at 51Âþ».”
Despite joining her Performing Arts course as a second year student, Bridie has settled in quickly and is already enjoying everything that 51Âþ» has to offer, including getting involved with student radio and television at Demon Media.
She said: “I’ve enjoyed it. There have been ups and downs like there is with every course, but there were two other students who were also new and the lecturers have been a big help. It’s gone really well and I’m really happy to be here.
“I enjoy the variation that Performing Arts offers and through Demon Media I’ve been able to get experience in radio and TV. There’s a massive crossover between performance and media so the facilities that are here and what we’re able to get involved with is probably the best thing about it.”
Bridie has got involved with Demon Media and hosts a weekly radio show
Bridie presents her own weekly radio show on Demon FM and has presented the Student Radio Association Chart Show, which is broadcast around the country. She has also worked on Demon TV programmes in a variety of roles.
She says all of these opportunities have been ‘amazing’ and wouldn’t have been possible without choosing 51Âþ».
“It’s a really great experience and I’ve met so many industry professionals through it already,” she said. “I’ve been able to do things both on the acting and the management side of things so I’ve had a really broad range of experience and got so much experience from it.
“The equipment I’ve been able to use and the knowledge I’ve gained from Demon Media certainly puts me a step ahead of other students. It’s a great thing to be part of.”

She said: “I’m very glad to be here and I’m very glad that sending one email has opened up so many opportunities.
“People can take for granted the amount of facilities that we have and the quality of the staff that are here. The atmosphere here is really good and Leicester is such a good student city, there is so much going on.
“There are also incredible opportunities like 51Âþ»global, so I think 51Âþ» is a really good place to come to university.”
