A 51Âþ»­ Leicester (51Âþ»­) nursing graduate got the surprise of her life when her boyfriend popped the question in the middle of a maze.

Romantic Ahmed Majid dropped to one knee to pop the question to Ayesha Iqbal at Wistow Maze in Leicestershire on Saturday.

Ahmed, from Evington, picked the maze as the perfect setting for the proposal after a suggestion from his stepmother Roshni.

The 23-year-old risk consultant said: “I wanted the place I popped the question to be memorable.

“I have seen lots of people do it in a restaurant and I wanted my proposal to be a bit more special than that.

“I chatted to my family and my stepmum came up with the idea of the maze. I looked it up online and thought it looked great.”

Ahmed called bosses at Wistow Maze so he could set up the “chance” meeting.

The former pupil at Leicester’s Wyggeston Queen Elizabeth I College, had asked Ayesha’s sister to take her on a tour of some their favourite places then end the day at the maze at 4.30pm.

Ayesha, who graduated in from 51Âþ»­, said she did not suspect a thing.

The 25-year-old nurse told the Leicester Mercury: “I was with my sister Sahna and I just thought we were having a lovely day out.

“We got to the maze and it was lovely. We walked up some steps and right in front of me was Ahmed in a suit. I had no idea what was happening.

“He dropped to one knee, got out a ring and asked me to marry him.

“I paused because I was in shock and he looked worried but I said yes. It was such a romantic gesture. I can’t wait to get married now.”

Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze, said: “What a wonderful gesture by this young man. It just shows that romance is not dead.”

The maze is designed in a different shape every year. This year it is in the shape of the head of Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, and has a whodunnit quiz trail. Ahmet said of Ayesha: “She did not have a clue. It was me whodunnit.”
