A PhD student at 51Âþ»­ Leicester (51Âþ»­) has been made the Chair of a committee within the world’s biggest professional association of technology.

Abdullah Almuttiri becomes the new Chair of the at the . He also becomes a member of the Governing Board of the prestigious IEEE Consumer Electronics Society.



IEEE Young Professionals help professional development, humanitarian efforts and technical knowledge. The Consumer Electronics Society is the leading technical association in the industry whose publications and presentations are made by researchers around the globe.

Abdullah, who is studying for his PhD in Electronics and Communications Engineering, credits 51Âþ»­ with introducing him to the society and urged students to take advantage of the opportunities it offers to young engineers and researchers.

He said: “I would strongly recommend any student to interact with any of these wonderful enriching societies as early as possible. Those doing research degrees should engage and interact, not just attend conferences.”   

“To make this easier here at 51Âþ»­ I am planning to reactivate the IEEE student branch to bridge the gap between current students and research communities.

“This will help significantly not only during the student’s study life but also their professional life. Get ahead of your profession before it gets ahead of you!”

As chairman, he helps organize conferences at which professional workshops are held and PhD papers presented. He also brings issues regarding young professionals to the Board of Governors.

He became involved with the society in 2013, after taking part in 51Âþ»­’s Training Development Programme which helps research students to navigate the networking and conference attendance required. He met committee members at events and joined the committee at the beginning of 2015, organizing a workshop and event in Berlin. His work so impressed the committee asked him to succeed the outgoing president.

Abdullah has bee at 51Âþ»­ since 2011 when he began work on a Master’s and following that he enrolled as a PhD candidate.
