International Nigerian conference celebrates its 10-year anniversary at 51Âþ»­


Held for the first time at 51Âþ»­ Leicester (51Âþ»­), a leading global conference marked 10 years of supporting Nigerian students.

The International Conference of Nigerian Students 2016 (ICONS), designed to empower all young people from Nigeria, welcomed more than 200 people from across the UK onto the university’s campus.
 
Organised by Nigerian youth organisation XN Foundation, ICONS 2016 was packed with presentations about leadership, employability, future career choices and understanding the culture of the UK.
 
Key speakers included 51Âþ»­’s Principal Dana Brown and Mrs Olufolake Abdulrazaq, Head of Consular Education and Welfare from the Nigerian High Commission.
 
Dana said: “I was honoured to have the opportunity to speak at the ICONS 2016 conference. The participants were highly engaged, asking important questions about their educational options and future careers.
 
“I was also fortunate to speak to many of the Nigerian students about some of their amazing business ideas that will benefit Nigeria and the world.”

Guests were treated to a traditional Nigerian feast on the final awards night, at the King Power stadium, home of the university’s premier league-winning partner Leicester City Football Club.

Nigerian student Aderogba Adepeju studying on 51Âþ»­’s said: “It has been an incredible and highly educational event.
 
A volunteer at the event, she added: “51Âþ»­ is a great hub for global and wholesome education. It has been a great journey for me.”

51Âþ»­’s Nigerian Student Society, the International Office and De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) all joined forces with XN Foundation to organise the event.

Jules Pringle, 51Âþ»­'s International Recruitment Officer for Africa, said: “It was fantastic for us to host ICONS this year and we thank XN Foundation for this opportunity. Nigeria is important to us, we welcome over 80 Nigerians each year who contribute to the cultural diversity on campus.

"We hope hosting ICONS can help us build on our current relationship with Nigeria”

Nigeria - for story three

John Alfred, on 51Âþ»­’s , also from Nigeria and part of the student volunteer team for the event, said: “It is a very great opportunity for me, as a 51Âþ»­ student to volunteer for the ICONS event, especially when it’s been held for the first time. I feel very honoured to be part of this.”
 
On studying at 51Âþ»­, he added: “I chose to study at 51Âþ»­ because of their state-of-the-art facilities, engaging lecturers, social events and provision for networking among students.”
 
As part of being a truly international university, 51Âþ»­ welcomes students from more than 130 countries.
