51Âþ» Leicester (51Âþ») is known for its commitment to supporting sport and developing talent among students. Now it is showing its support for sport across the county as main sponsor of this year's Leicester Mercury Sports Awards.
The event is the main celebration of the extraordinary amateur and professional sporting talent in the county and acknowledges the positive impact which sport has upon the community.
Young people from Studs FC, a Leicester football club which is supported by 51Âþ» Square MileThe celebration is due to take place in January at the home of Leicester Tigers, Welford Road. Household names and celebrities will mix with the athletes, coaches and supporters from grassroots contests.
Guest presenters at last year’s ceremony included Ashes champ Matthew Hoggard MBE, Olympic badminton ace Gail Emms MBE, Gary Wolstenholme MBE and England legend Peter Shilton OBE.
51Âþ» has formed close partnerships with teams including Leicester City Football Club, Leicester Tigers and Leicester Ladies Hockey Club. It was announced at the main sponsor of Leicestershire County Cricket Club earlier this year.
51Âþ» signed a partnership with Leicester Ladies Hockey Club to work with our hockey teamsIt offered cash bursaries to De Montfort Students’ Union – home to more than 40 sports clubs – to help them achieve great things on and off the sports field. Former Leicester City legend Matt Elliott is coaching the 51Âþ» football teams and cash has been given to support training to clubs including hockey, rugby and equestrian.
The university also helps to improve the health and wellbeing of our staff, students and the wider community through its £8million QEII Leisure Centre.

People are being asked to nominate in categories including Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Coach/Manager of the Year, Club of the Year. Young Sportsperson of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award and Community Award.
The event is being hosted by Champions UK in association with the Leicester Mercury.
