Three cheers for the 51Âþ»­ Saints, crowned European Champions!


51Âþ»­’s cheerleading squad the 51Âþ»­ Saints have been crowned European Summit champions after storming performances this weekend.

Both the Saints teams – the all girls squad and the co-ed team – came top of their categories at the European Summit competition, which featured cheerleaders from all over the UK and Europe.

It caps an incredible year for 51Âþ»­ Saints, who won Varsity, were crowned National Champions at the University Cheer and Dance Competition in Nottingham and were named Team of the Year and Coaches of the Year at the De Montfort Students’ Union’s annual Colours awards.

The latest accolade came on Sunday at the European Summit Championships,  which were run by the world cheerleading coalition the ICC ,UK cheerleading organisation Future Cheer, and the sport’s governing body, the British Cheerleading Association.

The 51Âþ»­ Saints were invited to take part because they had won the national title. They were pitted against the best teams in their division.

Ellie Gabriel, Dance student who is one of the 51Âþ»­ Saints social secretaries, said: “We’d never competed in this contest before and we were very fortunate to be asked to take part so to win it is incredible.


“The university has been very supportive so it’s good to bring home a couple of trophies to 51Âþ»­!”

The team, who normally train for five hours a week, put in some long hours to train for the event. The Sunday before the competition they practised for five hours straight to perfect their routines.

The Saints will be bringing their two trophies back to the campus over the summer.
