English lecturer has short story published in ELLE magazine


A short story written by a 51Âþ»­ Leicester (51Âþ»­) literature lecturer has been published by ELLE UK, one of the country’s biggest-selling women’s magazines.

Dr Hila Shachar’s story, Colour Theory, was selected as one of just five runners-up in this year’s ELLE Writing Competition, which is now in its seventh year.

Writers were asked to send in a 500-word piece inspired by the hashtag #RelationshipGoals. Dr Shachar’s appears on elleuk.com and is mentioned in the January issue of ELLE.
 
Dr Shachar said: "My story combines theory and creative memoir writing, and is based on my personal experiences of having Synaesthesia, which is like the reverse of colour blindness. I wasn’t expected to be a runner up, and I was pleasantly surprised when I got the news!"

Judges were Lorraine Candy, ELLE Editor-in-Chief; Kenya Hunt, ELLE acting content editor; Jessie Burton, author of The Miniaturist, Kate Mosse, Novelist and Chair and co-founder of the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction and Anna James, ELLE literary editor.

Prior to joining 51Âþ»­, Dr Shachar wrote for The Guardian, Desktop magazine and she is still a regular freelance writer for The Australian Ballet.

She is a member of the research group Centre for Adaptations, whose research focuses on the adaptation of classic literary works and authors in media including film, TV and ballet.

Dr Shachar is currently working on the monograph, Screening the Author: The Literary Biopic, a forthcoming book to be published by Palgrave Macmillan.
