Description

The beautiful game and LGBTQ+ rights and experiences

The discussion will start with last year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup held in Qatar, a country where LGBTQ+ rights currently do not exist. This talk will discuss the lived experiences of players and football fans, and how LGBTQ+ issues linked to football have been represented in the media. From here, the discussion will broaden out to consider wider themes of LGBTQ+ people’s rights and experiences in men’s and women’s football, from elite to grassroots levels. As the game moves on from Qatar 2022, and prepares for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, this is the perfect time to take stock on how far we have come and what still needs to happen.

Chaired by Genevieve Gordon (Senior Lecturer in Law at 51Âþ»), Panel members: Dr Rory Magrath (Associate Professor of Sociology at Solent University, Southampton), Nali Simukulwa (freelance writer and journalist) and Alex Baker (Chairman of Stonewall FC, President of the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association). This event is part of 51Âþ» Pride to mark LGBTQ+ History Month.
